a short read but there is a bit to chew over if you let it. Fup is a duck but you don't meet her until halfway through. That's when it gets good. before that it seemed a bit staggered and choppy. But then Fup comes along and it's really funny - the mash up of a 22 year old grandson, a 99 year old grandfather and a fat 20-lb duck who lives like a dog or a pig on a ranch. But, then the end becomes a bit mystical and tries to be sophisticated or heavy with symbolism and it loses it's charm a little bit.

Reads like an Annie Proulx fable by way of Pynchon (himself a big fan of Jim Dodge's work). Engages with sentimentality in the best way.

4.5/5 docking a half a star for the ending. It’s a charming story reminiscent of East of Eden, but much shorter and less convoluted. The language was beautiful and the story was sweet and engaging, except I didn’t like the end (maybe I didn’t understand it?).
