I picked up this book on an absolute whim; I'm fond of classic vampire literature and this seemed to not be all "sparkling in the sunlight" vampire romance. Boy was i right.

I rarely get time to read nowadays but this book had me in its clutches the entire way. I became invested in the lives of these characters. I wanted to know every single detail of what shaped them, why they all decided to show up in that inn. This book is simultaneously composed of its own segments while being wonderfully interconnected.

Overall, if you're fed up with modern vampire fiction and want something more akin to Dracula? This is the book for you.

Oh my god. Read this if you love Mike Mingnolas other work.

I listened to the audio book and so sadly I can not comment on Mignola’s artwork. Generally speaking I’m a big fan though. Anyway this was pretty good. There’s two threads running throughout the book. The first is sort of the origin story of the title character, Lord Baltimore. The second is a bunch of guys sitting around a bar going “this world is creepy and fucked up, and I’m going to tell you a story about how I learned that firsthand.” The Baltimore stuff is fine, the creepy bar stories are fantastic. Good stuff, and definitely worth checking out even if you’re not necessarily a fan of Mignola’s comics work.

3.5 Stars. This was entertaining, but not mind-blowing. Told as a bunch of "short stories" from 3 guys sitting around in a tavern until the story catches up to the present. I liked all the supernatural stuff, but didn't really understand the connection to "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" story. It seemed like maybe he had an idea to write a story with a connection, but then got away from it, but decided to leave the very thin thread there.

Can't say I'm a huge fan of Mignola's art, but I have enjoyed a bunch of his graphic novels. I expected to see a lot more art in this book. There were many small pictures of skulls and things, but they looked more like clip art.

gorgeous to look at, certainly -- the woodcuts totally knocked me every which way. the stories, however, were sort of generally creepy bloodbaths, and didn't quite live up to the illustrations.
