I read over the blurbs for the other books in Arcanium and decided to go for the stories I want to read rather than reading it all in order. The whole reason I came across this series was due to reading about Aerial. For most series, even if they're standalone novels, I like to read it from the start. I'm glad I did that because Fortune really set the stage for me and peaked my interest in the cast.

Arcanium is a UF/PNR story with an edge of kink. The stories take place within a magical circus run by a Jinn and the circus members are a mix of humans and demons. Whether they realize it or not, all of the people are running away from something. Within the bounds of the circus, each of them are imprisoned by their fears and find freedom by embracing what haunts them the most.

The main theme of the series is great. I love it. I love the idea of magic being the razor upon which acknowledgement, growth, surrender and utter abandonment can be found.

The writing has an uneven pace. There are two main characters but it's told within the perspective of one. That choice was a mistake in my opinion because it took away from the story. Here are the heroes of the tale. Now let's only listen to one of them the whole time! It annoyed me. Unlike Fortune, I didn't become attached to the two best friends like I thought I would. Which took away a large part of what I enjoyed in the start of this series.

Evans creates interesting characters and I didn't really get a chance to dive into Seth and Lars. Most of their narrative had to do with putting up with their entrapment. There was more character development for the conjoined twins than the boys. It's still hard to envision what the characters really look like, the setting or the aerial acts that the boys performed. Some of the intimate moments between Seth and Lars had a lot of promise but I felt like the story ended without significant change. Progress, yes. Real change? Nah.

I was unhappy when I realized that I got to the end of the book because I feel like that part of the story should have been 3/4 into the story.

I'm picky. This book was ok. It was nice to read the story because I got to know some of the other cast members better but it was not ultimately satisfying.
