Great return to form, though the dog dialogue was naff and shitty.

Poor Emily Arundell suspected someone wanted her dead after a suspicious fall down the stairs (thanks to her mischievous dog’s ball). She penned a letter to Hercule Poirot, but by the time he got around to it, she was already six feet under. Typical Hercule Poirot timing.
First things first—Captain Hastings as a narrator. Love him, but does he ever stop meddling with my deductions? His constant assumptions were like roadblocks to my budding theories. Sure, it’s probably intentional, but it made me long for a third-person narrative where I could freely craft my own (inevitably wrong) conclusions.
The cast of suspects was classic Agatha Christie: greedy relatives, dithering friends, nosy neighbours, and a grumpy doctor. It’s like an all-you-can-suspect buffet, and I ate it up. While it didn’t blow my mind, Dumb Witness was exactly what I signed up for—solid, dependable Agatha Christie with all her trademark twists and turns.
If you stumble upon this book anywhere, grab it. It’s a perfectly enjoyable whodunit, even if it doesn’t break new ground. Also, a shoutout to the dog, who deserved more credit for being the most reliable character in the entire story.

Everyone blamed Emily Arundell’s accident on a rubber ball left on the stairs by her terrier Bob. But the more she thought about her fall, the more convinced she became that one of her relatives was trying to kill her.
So, on April 17th she wrote to Hercule Poirot. And included a request that he consult with her as soon as possible. Mysteriously he didn’t receive the letter until June 28th … by which time Emily was already dead.
I love the way that Christie writes Bob's interactions with Hastings.
