This is definitely a YA novel for young female Star Wars fans, or those who just love Ahsoka. This was also a rough read to push through after the Thrawn books... The complexity & reveals of those books are not present in this one. The plot is okay, minimal. It feels like a shallow exploration of her feelings with some misadventures amidst helping Raada farmers. It doesn't make me want to follow her as a character or read more of this moment in SW history.

What the hell is the grey creature? The description is so vague. Reading through the Wookiepedia page didn't give me much to go on either. Possibly the Sixth brother? Anyways, I gave it a try & I don't think I'll be reading any more of the canon books for awhile. Perhaps I'll return to the Zahn legends though.

Imagine, if you were one of the few survivors of Order 66. The guilt because out of everyone you, you for some unknown reason, survived out of all the worthy masters. The grief. Of being betrayed by the soldiers no, companions and comrades that were nothing but loyal. The Jedi Order your only family wiped out of the Force as if they never existed. How would you ever use the Force again?

This is Ahsoka's story.

Ahsoka tackles head-on the effect of PTSD after The Clone Wars, her struggles to reconnect with the Force mixed with weak characters and a slow plot.

My only issue with the queer love interest is that we never get real confirmation of Ahsoka’s sexuality. At the most, we got a (deleted) tweet from the author
I'm unsure whether editors/other prevented real confirmation in the novel but we can do better than this. However, it leaves for future opportunities to discuss Ahsoka's sexuality truthfully.

I found the main plot-point to be quite dull- here we have Ahsoka a legendary character on an ordinary planet helping farmers rise against the Empire. Where have I seen this before? I do not expect Ahsoka to be fighting Vader with a rainbow lightsaber but, it should not have taken up the majority of the novel.

Ahsoka truly shined through the heartfelt memories explored, the final climax and the addition of a familiar face. I was left breathless and, my heart ached at the flashbacks of her upbringing as a Jedi through Plo Koon, Obi-Wan and Anakin. Slow it may be, but the novel was satisfyingly action-packed at the climax. It was quite fascinating to receive more information about kyber crystals and how corrupted kyber crystals could be reverted. Despite its flaws, I have grown attached to this novel and, I appreciate it for what it is.

Chapter 3 Excerpt
“She felt the familiar tightness in her throat, the same strangling grief that came every time she imagined what had happened when the clone troopers turned. How many of her friends had been shot down by men they’d served with for years? How many of the younglings had been murdered by a man wearing a face they implicitly trusted? And how did the clones feel after it was done?"
