The worker-capitalist conflicts were interesting and Gaskell can sometimes use beautiful expressions which is mostly reason why I love English classics but this book goes on and on and on - mostly banking on deaths and other sad stuff and the protagonist is just too big a statue of all virtues.

2023: This is the second time reading this book, and either I wasn't paying very close attention the last time, or I was listening to an abridged copy because I had no recollection of the particulars of the ending, nor of the epigraphs at the beginning of each chapter. The epigraphs are always important in a story because they give hints and clues about how to read the story, so I am very glad that I reread this book with those, because it added so much to my enjoyment and understanding!
2021: I have watched the BBC mini series of this book many a time and loved it, so I thought it was high time to read it. I loved it so much! The movie is very well done, but as always the book was even better. I highly recommend the book and mini series!

North and South is a story about a lady named Margaret Hale, who moves from South to North and faces reality the hardest way. It also describes the love story between her and a mill owner. To be honest, I chose to read it because I thought the book will present the life in the industrial english towns, but that didn't happen. However, it is a good book, with nice plot and many twists, especially in the end.
