I did not anticipate loving this book. It is clear that Morris spent a lot of time with her sensitivity readers and editor in carefully crafting each character. I would gladly add this to a school library/classroom option!

This book has an interesting premis, but it tries to tackle too many complex issues for a story that has to be fully wrapped up in ~300 pages. Due to the length, all of the charactersโ personal conflicts are just given surface-level attention. I think this book would have been much better as a multi-book series.

This book was so exciting!! The story was fast paced and I loved the diverse cast of characters and how the story was narrated between the 4 members of team JERICHO. The clues and mystery kept me hooked like The Inheritance Games, but the plot and characters were so uniquely their own that I have no comparisons. I really liked seeing all the different perspectives and motivations for participating in such a high risk game. The friend group soling a mystery aspect also reminded me a little bit of another book I really enjoyed this year: Aces Wild by Amanda DeWitt, though the stories are completely different.
All I know is I will continue to read (and love) ANYTHING Brittney Morris writes!

This book spoke to my soul. I believed in changing the world at 15 and I still do as an adult. I work with individuals experiencing homelessness and social justice and activism are the fire at the core of me. So though this book is about teens for teens, I connected with it on so many levels.
Story revolves around 4 teenagers, Jax, Yas, Han & Spider, each with a particular set of talents that helps them as a team constantly win very challenging scavenger hunts. A big corporation threatens to change the landscape of their neighborhoods and their lives. When a super secret cyber activist organization takes over their scavenger site with a challenge of their own, the team enters to play for much higher stakes.
I read this book in one sitting. It was fast paced, exciting but also deep and insightful and dealt with many important and difficult topics. Topics of gentrification, economic inequality, identity, neurodiversity, racism, phobias, immigration were interwoven with regular teen stuff like friendship, first crushes, family dynamics. And there was so much talk of delicious food that my mouth was watering the entire time I was reading. Even one of the specialties from my culture (pljeskavica) got a mention!
This is a great read for teens but also for those young at heart! Apart from having to look up a few slang phrases (hey always an opportunity to learn!), so much of it was relatable across generations!

THE JUMP
Bสษชแดแดษดแดส Mแดสสษชs
Oแดแด NOW!
Four teens join together to participate in a digital scavenger hunt across Seattle as Team JERICHO. Each of them is diverse and has their own strengths: Jax- cryptologist, Yas- a Parkour expert, Spider- a hacker, and Han- a cartographerโฆ no gps here. Theyโre Black, Muslim-Pakistani, trans, sapphic, autistic with selective mutism, (and a nonbinary parent).
A vigilante group called The Order ๐๏ธ creates a puzzle with promises of a huge reward. The teens see this as their chance to save their community and fight back against the oil refinery that is planning to build and puts them all in danger. There isnโt a choice, is there??
This is a FAST moving, action-packed book. The clues were really fun and SO clever!! I love puzzles so this was my favorite part. Because it was so fast paced and there was so much happening I do wish there was more book though. 250 pages seemed a little short. It will be a great read for MG. My son wouldโve absolutely enjoyed this book at that age. In fact it gave me an excuse to message him and chat. He said it sounded cool and itโs kinda like ARG (Alternative Reality Games). I asked if that was like geocaching and he basically said mom, go read a book ๐นโฆ any chance to talk to them when they leave the nest, right?

The Jump by Brittney Morris is contemporary YA fiction featuring a cryptology scavenger hunt.
I did a blended read by following along in the book while listening to the full-cast audiobook, narrated by Zeno Robinson, Ali Andre Ali, Soneela Nankani, and Sagan Chen. They all did a wonderful job.
The plot is fast-paced and full of action. It follows the perspectives of the four teens who make up Team Jericho--the best scavenger-hunting team in Seattle--Jax, Yas, Spider, and Han. I loved the multi-POV, especially for the diversity within this friend group. The author thanked multiple sensitivity readers in her Acknowledgements, which you love to see.
I already mentioned that the diversity in this book is phenomenal. Three of the four main characters are people of color. Jax is black, vegan, and has a nonbinary parent. Yas is a queer Pakistani Muslim who wears a hijab. Spider is transgender and Korean. Han is neurodiverse and occasionally nonverbal. The diversity extends to different family structures, which I think is very important to include in YA literature.
The book says it's for ages 12 and up. There's a lot of heavy topics explored here, including but not limited to gentrification, racism, classism, transphobia, gender discrimination, environmental racism, and unconscious and hidden bias. So keep that in mind before diving in if any of those may be triggers for you.
It ends on a teensy cliffhanger, so I wouldn't be surprised if this would become a series. I'd definitely continue reading!
