Pretty humorous even for a young adult book.

Some people will not be charmed by the meta of this book. But I was.
The character talks to the camera a lot, even taking a break from the story at one point to insert some stuff "in case you're reading this book for school." And he's definitely riding the line of obnoxious, but I came around.

This is an over-the-top book. Goofy. Ridiculous.
And violent things happen. A lot. For laughs.

Be prepared for this book.

Luckily, I was looking for something hilarious and snarky to fill a genre hole in my booktalking slate. And this fit perfectly.

I kinda loved it.

I like Strand's writing. He's fun and scary. Creepy and laugh out loud. This book falls into his teen reader market, not the scarier stuff that he writes for adults. But that's ok, because Strand's writing is about real people falling into weird and crazy situations. And because I think Strand hooked my 10 year old on horror. As soon as we finished reading this book together, she immediately had to go to Barnes and Noble and find more Strand. I'm hoping that it sticks. We'll find out.

I received this book for a honest review. The book is written from Tyler Churchills perspective of what happened. Tyler is your typical teenager, he studies hard, has a smart girlfriend Kelley, and a very interesting friend Adam. It all starts when his history teacher gives him a F without even checking to see if he got the answers right because he claimed the kid behind Tyler cheated off him and it was Tyler's fault. So of course Tyler is upset who wouldn't be when you are accused of cheating and you didn't cheat. So Adam sets out to get revenge against Mr. Click the mean history teacher. After a week
Adam gives Tyler a voodoo doll of Mr. Click and tell's him to poke him while they are in class. It's only going to hurt his leg.... Unfortunately it wasn't that simple instead Mr. Click's leg shoots off as if sawed off by a chainsaw, blood is everywhere and thus starts the bad day.

Tyler enlists the help of his girlfriend Kelley to deal with Adam who has clearly gone off the deep end upon the death of Mr. Click when the boys accidentally bent the neck of the doll. After tracking down Adam, they learn that he's gotten another voodoo doll this time of Tyler in hopes of trying to get Tyler to not tell the police that Adam made a voodoo doll. The trio embarks on a journey to return the voodoo doll of Tyler to the jewelry story where it was created. However it's not a smooth trip instead it turns into a whirlwind adventure full of blood, horror, car thieves, killers, taxi drivers, crazy cannibals and more. This story keeps you on the edge of your seat it's a non-stop adventure.

I love the way that the characters are written, you almost feel like your with them, because the story sucks you in so completely. There is so much going on in the story and the author does a great job of giving as much detail with out feeling overloaded so you can almost see the people and scenes at least I did. I found myself giggling through most of the book, my hubby found annoying as he was trying to watch a game last night, and I'd have to tell him why I was giggling. I enjoyed reading the book a lot, it was much better then I expected it to be. I think anyone who's into horror with a twist of humor would enjoy this book.

This A Bad Day for Voodoo is the first book I have read by Jeff Strand, and oh my, it makes me wish I had all of his other ones as well.

My GoodReads tagging system does not contain the tag ‘humour’ yet, but after having read this story, I see what a mistake that is. This book promises to be funny, and it for sure delivers. I can’t say I’ve read many humorous books before (Andy Weir’s The Martian comes to mind), but this is definitely one of the funniest ones I will ever read (unless, you know, I will dive into more of Jeff Strand’s books, and they prove to be even better).

As for what happens in it, well…
SpoilerA few school kids by the names of Tyler, Kelley and Adam basically make bad decision after bad decision after bad decision, and somehow manage not to get themselves killed. Can’t say the same for the people around them, though!

Voodoo dolls, Rottweilers, Rottweilers with working Voodoo dolls in their mouths (!!!), cannibals, loss of limbs, loss of body parts not caused by said cannibals, irresponsible usage of pizza cutters, car chases, car crashes, car thefts, shootings,… it all happens in this very exciting and fast-paced story that you will not put down before you finish it.

Really hope to see more people reading this book, as you won’t regret it. Everyone could use a laugh in their lives, and it’s right here!

I really enjoyed this book. It was a lot of fun. Jeff Strand is one of the few authors that can make me laugh out loud; this has lead to some awkward moments at bus stops, in restaurants, and during funerals.

I decided to lend this book to my kids. They're at that age where life can be a somewhat challenging, if not downright frightening, day to day existence--puberty can be cruel. They both had similar reactions when I put it on their Kindles: "Whatever!" and "Get out of my room!"

But soon it became apparent that they both enjoyed the book. At first I encouraged the open discussions about Jeff's thrilling prose, but the repetitive quoting at length began to wear thin. The manic giggling behind my back really wasn't anything new, but Mr Strand's influence certainly wasn't helping.

I honestly thought I'd seen the last of it, finished with the childish hysterics, but then it seemed to go to a whole new level. I honestly don't know what to do about them anymore. They keep me up most nights. It's not necessarily the running around and banging, but more likely it's the laughter. It's not normal either, like, like some kind of animal's--hyenas or something. I'm so tired.
I'm writing this from my room--behind the barricade. They've cut off my electricity. I'm using my phone to post this. It's almost out of power so I gotta type fast.
They've been quiet for over an hour. I'm thinking of making a run for it.

Pray for me!

If you like books where everything goes wrong and then just keeps going wrong, with a lot of unnecessary fourth wall breaking thrown in, then this fic is for you! It was not for me.

Jeff Strand's book Dweller was on my to-read list when it dawned on me that he wrote two YA books for the company I work for. Holy insanity, Batman! I loved this book and I wasn't only following his instructions when I gave it five stars. I think people throw around "LOL" a lot these days, but I legitimately laughed out loud. So fun!

F#ck yeah voodoo! Like Elmore Leonard writing True Blood minus the stupid romance parts.
