really taken by jennifer croft's writing. i knew i wanted to continue engaging with her work after finishing the extinction of irena rey and am very grateful to have followed the rabbithole. homesick is enigmatic and mysterious, much like irena rey. it's abundantly clear this is an intensely personal story for croft, and the story's telling through the third-person makes it all the more affecting and heart-rending. i absolutely flew through this. i found it engaging, thought-provoking, and unlike anything else i've read. there is so much to unpack - illness, the impact of illness on family dynamics and sibling relationships, language, education, age, (im)maturity, loss. i'm so looking forward to reading more of croft's translation work next! she is a force to reckon with.

A great telling of the complex nature of sibling relationship from childhood and into adulthood. I felt the first half of this novel was incredibly well told and the pacing felt interesting. But as some others have said in their reviews, it loses its way towards the end and feels a little confused.

I borrowed this audiobook using the Libby app from my local library. Support your local library!

This book is a bit strange and I’m not sure really how to rate it. There are things I love about this book and other things that puzzle me. It is told in short vignettes that follow Amy as she grows up with her sister. Each chapter heading is a sentence that basically summarizes or introduces the chapter. Therefore if you read the table of contents it tells the abbreviated version of the novel. Much like a poetry device. Very interesting structurally and Amy’s story and character arc is very interesting as well. However, Amy seems to be very disassociated from her own feelings. She is telling us her story but it is like it is happening to someone else. This was a bit difficult to get used to but I can see the author was using this device as a way of illustrating Amy’s mental health issues. Overall I am leaning towards chalking the peculiarities up to the author’s brilliance and my limitations.

*audiobook version* some book are not meant for audio books and this is definitely one of it. Croft’s language is masterful as ever, but the vignetteness of it is grating and difficult without images.
