The Only Good Indians is such a compelling and gripping horror story once you get into it. The beginning is a little slow, and the author makes you work to decipher his writing style - but it pays off to figure out the rhythm of it. I especially liked the various POV shifts and the importance of even the most miniscule details. Will definitely be reading more by Stephen Graham Jones.

This is one of those books that takes a while to get going, but once it does, hold onto your butt. The beginning and the end lost me a little but the main middle chunk was incredible. There are images in there that are going to stick with me for a while. For example:

Lewis and the teeth, hello???

. The author also uses a really unique mechanic in the middle that I loved once I got used to.
I also really appreciate being able to read a story with such a heavy influence from the Blackfeet culture. Not just for an understanding of the scarcity and injustice, but for the richness of their traditions, legends, lore, etc.

In short, I'm very glad I read this book and will be thinking of it for a while.

I struggled in the beginning with this book, the writing style was different than everything I've ever read. At first it felt like the narrator wasnt sure what they were trying to say, and that was off putting but then I realized it was purposeful. Everyone in this story, except for Denorah, is an unreliable narrator. Every part not from her perspective is written in that way. Her parts are smooth and easy. Everyone else's a little choppy, a little distracted, a little unsure. Once I got the hang of it, it was better. 

Each character's voice was unique. The story was nothing that I've ever read and it was dark as anything. I was not prepared for so much death. I'm going with a 4 only because the writing style was so hard. I found skipping to the second person for stuff in the second act (don't wanna spoil) to be really rough and kind of jarring. 

I do really like how important Denorah, the fourteen-year-old daughter of one of the originally introduced characters became. I liked following the plot through characters so that it felt character driven but still moved by the plot. 

I'll definitely be reading this author again.

it's actually a very good read and a very good narrative. i found myself liking the antagonist of the story vs the protagonists. a lot of the basketball terminology and descriptions really lost me near the end and i felt like I was reading it to just get it over with vs enjoying the book for the horror of it.

Despite the prose being overwritten at times, and the amount of violence against women, this book is about nature taking its revenge and breaking intergenerational trauma cycles.
