More literary than I was expecting, with a unique voice that's funny and allows you to read the self delusion.

‘The emblem of good women is always this anxiety about drinking -other people’s drinking. And I knew why. Because alcohol releases truth and truth is something good women never care to hear.’

Ugh so I kind of have had a weakness for the New York Review of Books classics for a long time but they always turn out so straight! This book would have been perfect when I was deepest into clean lines, dry wit, and restless characters full of vague, wild longing but I got at it too late. Still good! Reminded me weirdly of Desert Hearts and sort of Patricia Highsmith, plus a bunch of people I know.
