I don't know if it's because I read this in one afternoon, or because I read a book right before this one with such rich relationship building, but this book seemed very choppy to me. It felt as though a lot of the character development was being told to me and not shown. It also threw me for a loop how Juliette is supposed to be so hard and badass, yet she acquiesces so easily right from the get-go, and she'll cry at the drop of a hat. Lastly, it felt as though flowery phrases were thrown in just for the sake of trying to add something magical when there wasn't anything magical being felt or conveyed. I had high hopes for this one based on reviews in various FB groups, but I don't know that I'll go back for more.

If your looking for a steamy enemies to lovers romance, this one is fucking hot. The sexual tension and chemistry between these two just what I needed. I gave this one four stars for the sex, but not so much the plot, it was pretty generic to me.

  • Short story
  • Enemies to lovers, but it moreso stemmed out if misunderstanding and they were both pining
  • The beginning was a bit quick and dubious consent but she did consent eventually.
  • Good communication, they didn't let misunderstandings marinate

okay so first: MAJOR COBALLOWAY TB!! (which is why i read the book and i was not disappointed whew)
this went by so fast it was a little crazy, but i loved the couple and their story so much! i kind of wish this was a proper novel instead of a novella, i would’ve loved it if it had an angsty start ✈️leading to them getting together and then this book and everything! but i guess the author had something else (hopefully, better) planned so i can’t wait for the next books in this series to come out. i really hope she improves upon the way the “american g*ds” talk though, it’s weird as fcuk

Actually 2.5 stars.

Filthy Gods is the prelude to the American Gods series, and it felt like it should have been a bit longer and classed as the first book instead. It is intended, I believe, to introduce us to the other characters - the American Gods - because Nathaniel is part of the group but not one of the ‘Gods’. It felt like the plot of a full-length novel though, that could have been improved by being just that.

I would have liked to see more about Juliette’s friendship with Mandy, as I could not remember who she was when she was mentioned later on. The length did not impact Juliette’s character; I liked her from the start, and her development was nice. I didn’t like Nathaniel, starting with him trying to blackmail Juliette into sleeping with him that summer by promising that if she did he wouldn’t tell everyone all her personal business. There were other things I didn’t like about him too, for example:

Again, my voice shook, ever so slightly, but he caught it and like a lion catching its prey, he dug his teeth in. “By letting me conquer you, Juliette.” I let out a dry laugh at that. “Conquer me?” I spluttered, jabbing a finger to my chest. “You are not conquering me, Nathaniel. This is the twenty-first century, and I’m no damsel in need of conquering.”

I, like Juliette, did not like this. Because of my bad impression of him and the short length of the novel, there wasn’t enough to the plot and to Nathaniel for me to come around to liking him, unfortunately. And if I don’t like a main character, that can impact my enjoyment of the book.

There were quotes that made me think of Coballoway from the Addicted Series, which automatically makes me soft, i.e. “His mind had aroused mine even before his body had.” — I won’t lie, quotes like this make me Feel Things.

To round things up, this was a good enough prelude to interest me to pick up the next book in the series, but it did leave quite a bit to be desired for me.

Filthy Gods is my go to re-read. It’s short and steamy and always a fun time. I’ve probably read Nathaniel and Juliette’s story 3 times since the first time I read this book and I’m always super excited about it, as if I don’t already know how it ends.

I know they say not to judge a book by its cover, but from the moment I saw this one I was Hooked! And the story itself did Not disappoint. Nathaniel Radcliffe is a god among men, and oh how the mighty have fallen. For the hardworking, sharp-tongued, Juliette who challenges him constantly. The only problem is they are sworn enemies battling it out to be top of their class at Yale. How can he get her to see that the fire between them is meant to burn the world down, not each other?

I am in utter awe of this story and worship at the throne that is R Scarlett's writing. Anxiously awaiting the rest of the American Gods!
