Meh.

"Okay, now the plot's going to start... hm, no. Okay, maybe now... no." -- me, for the first 80% of the book before realising that no, this *was* the closest thing to a plot we're going to get.

At first I thought the lazy, clumsy, repetitive callbacks to previous books throughout were just a heavy-handed way of making sure you remembered what happened, but eventually I realised they're there to trigger enough nostalgia that fans don't notice this is the book equivalent of empty calories.

Read it for completeness if you're a big fan of the series, but don't expect much.

For pacing issues, see other reviews, it was definitely odd pacing. Fairly predictable? Yup. Still, interesting things wrapped up, new things introduced. We can have more of this.

All throughout this book I was shouting "HER NAME IS CLARIEL." While weeping for her. I'm so glad it was Lirael with her in the end.
