meh. meh. meh.

Clay's Quilt did nothing for me and it led to a rather dull book club discussion. The book didn't seem to offer anything unique or new. It read like so many other "living poor/underprivileged lives in the South"-novels that I read around the same time. Some of the characters veered towards being cliches.

This is the third book I’ve read by this author, and probably my least favorite but that is not to say it is not worth reading because it is. House’s books are very lyrical and full of beautiful imagery and strong non-cliché country folk. I don’t think his books are commonly referred to as a trilogy, because each can be read on its own independent of the others, but the books relay stories from three generations of the same family and it is interesting to finally know where the end of one character’s story led into or shaped the life of another. House really captures the people and way of life of the Eastern Kentucky mountain region.

I loved this book. It made me homesick for the Eastern Kentucky that I knew as a young girl. It’s very well written so much so that I can easily visualize it. I will definitely be reading more books by this author.

A beautifully written and introspective character study, not only of Clay but of the Appalachian mountains and the fictional community of Free Creek. Descriptions of place, character, and music shine through with so much tender love and care.

This was a well-written book by a talented author, but I wouldn't recommend it. While it was somewhat fascinating, it was filled with stereotypes, fighting, and incessant drinking until drunk. Two and a half.

I absolutely adored this book. So many similarities between Clay’s story and my own. But also a lot that is different! I love the Appalachian heritage that I get to carry on.

Clay's quilt by Silas House
Clay lost his mother to the attack and now works in the coal mine.
He has many aunts that help as he's only 4 years old. He watches his uncle make quilts as he grows up and how he puts the pieces together that tell his story.
As he gets older he moves closer to the mine, where he works and is given his mother's memory box.
