I have only ever read (listened) Correia's Tom Stranger series, but I liked it. So when I saw this one on Audible, I thought I'd give it a try. And wow, what a crazy, alternative history story. Part-mystery noire (a la 1920s), part-adventure, part-spy novel, this has a little bit of everything.

First, total credit goes to Bronson Pinochet. He made this story come alive. What an incredible narrator. 5+ stars for him.

As for the story, wow. It is non-stop. It sucked me right in and kept me captive until the end. Granted, the world-building was not the strongest. It was set in the 1930s great depression era, as the world was ramping up towards WWII, but yet showed a lot of the 1950s racism and tension. But given that it's an alternative history, I can't blame the author for taking great liberties.

The characters were an interesting bunch. And the character building, especially for Jake and Faye, was solid. The magic system, like much of what Correia creates, was unique as it built upon science, particularly physics.

I greatly enjoyed this wild ride and will definitely pick up book 2.
