I've never read any of Peter Abrahams' books before, but I've heard that he's a good suspense author and he didn't disappoint me with "Reality Check." I love the main character, Cody, and he seemed the most real to me: flawed and awkward (what teenager isn't, so some degree?), but good at heart. At first, I thought that Cody's girlfriend, Clea, was too perfect (freakishly smart, beautiful, rich, etc) and fit too neatly into the stereotypical popular teenage girl role. However, after reading, I thought differently. She dates the rough-around-the-edges boy from the other side of the tracks because she really likes him and they are great together, not just to rebel against her uptight father. She also has a lot more spunk and individuality going for her than I originally thought, and it's demonstrated through the dialogue and the strength she displays when she is kidnapped. The ending is a bit abrupt--I like a little wrap-up--but overall, a good read.

This took forever to finish, not even sure why I bothered. Not that great.

This is a good suspense book for male or female YA readers.

Super quick read, though it took some getting used to the author's writing style. Many short fragmented thoughts and sentences, didn't use "and" very much. Just commas. Great for guys. Does include a little bit of language and sexuality.

I was looking for another "boy" book by an author I've loved in the past. This was OK, but not quite it.

“Screw your courage to the sticking place / and we’ll not fail.” This is a quote from another book, but it’s important in this one, and I liked it.

I’ve read Abrahams’ Echo Falls series and remember really enjoying it. This one was not quite as good, but enjoyable.

Cody is a football player, but not very good academically. He’s going out with Clea, and he really likes her, but after she’s forced to move away to a boarding school, she goes missing. And then he gets an injury and starts skipping school. So he decides to go look for Clea.

Cody is a little slow sometimes, but I liked him. I understood why he did what he did, and why he went looking for Clea.

Honestly, my biggest problem was that I didn’t feel much emotion from the characters. I had a hard time getting close to Cody and Clea, because I didn’t get a lot of feeling out of them. They weren’t rounded enough for me to get really attached.

The story was also really slow. Before the mystery happens, it’s slow, and after the mystery starts, the story is slow. I wanted it to be more fast-paced and exciting, and it really wasn’t. The ending was good, and when the revelation was happening it was more exciting, but it didn’t really keep me glued to the page. The writing was really plain, too, which didn't help keep me glued to the page, either.

Still, I enjoyed it for the most part. I do want to pick up another of Abrahams’ books, because I want it to be good. I want it to be exciting, so I want to give him another shot.

Good young adult mystery novel. Didn't talk down to teenagers and was kind of edgy.

This was a fast read with plenty of suspense! I would recommend it to anyone who likes young adult lit but isn't into fantasy. It deals with many normal teen issues, relationships with parents, relationships with boyfriends/girlfriends, high school athletics and academics, and preparation for college.

I would have enjoyed hearing more about what happened to our main character in his future, but other than that, it was good.
