From the perspective of a former youth with SMI, there are some things I wish were worded or approached differently in this graphic guide. However, I think it is one of the most engaging and approachable guides for youth in the broader population with stress and common symptoms of mild to moderate anxiety and depression, and it does suggest seeking the professional help that would likely differentiate SMI from a depressive episode, for example. The language is accessible to younger folks and optimistic without deceiving or downplaying unhappy truths. I am considering ways this could be an educational resource that sparks more natural conversation compared to traditional approaches to mental health education that feel sterile and accusingly pathological.
