Genius! Beautiful art and a decidedly not dreadful story.

A very quirky book. The opening scene was a bit in the spirit of [b:James and the Giant Peach|6689|James and the Giant Peach|Roald Dahl|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1320412586s/6689.jpg|2379261] but the rest is very distinctly "lesterian". Lester is rather the odd child, with his lists and collections, maybe even on the autistic spectrum (and I think this transmits in the vocabulary used in the story, which certainly is peculiar and may render the book slightly less accessible to the younger crowd) but it certainly doesn't help when "cousin" Clara moves in and starts doting on him with her knitted sweaters. Now, I certainly don't want my child to think it's okay to be unappreciative or disrespectful of his elders, but those sweaters truly are as dreadful as there ever was. No, they're preposterously ridiculous. Very memorable!

What do you do when a strange relative arrives and gifts you with sweater after dreadful sweater? Lester tries everything, but the answer to his problem ends up being more unexpected than his sweaters. Excellent word choice and lovely illustrations - students will love this as a read aloud!

Cousin Clara's house was eaten by a crocodile, thankfully she wasn't in it, but she has come to live with Lester's family. She's "a curiously fast knitter," much to Lester's dismay. Find out what happens to Lester's dreadful sweaters!

Love this fun story about relatives who don't know when to quit. A good, lighter pairing with Mac Barnett's Extra Yarn.

Lester's sweaters were dreadful. They were also awesome sweaters. I loved the illustrations in this book and Lester was a proper nerd- smart, neurotic, and particular. I'd really like to read more about Lester in the future.

I was not expecting to love this book as much as I did! It was quirky, funny, and unique. I really enjoyed it! A fun little read with some great characters and adorable illustrations.
