This was a fascinating, engrossing, and ultimately not depressing book; in particular I love the writing style, which is conversational without (quite) veering into dialect.
It’s about a single woman who gets pregnant in the 1950s, and as a result the book deals quite heavily with sexism. I don’t think, in contrast to some reviewers, that it’s trite or over-exaggerated; if anything, I think some consequences are played down (or gentled as a result of the MC being middle class white to begin with). However, it’s wildly unclear whether the MC’s racism, homophobia, and antisemitism are also the author’s, which is the sort of thing that an author should really be clear on. Read at your own risk, I suppose.
Moderate: Racism, Homophobia, and Antisemitism
