My first introduction to Rogerson's writing was last year, when I read "Vespertine." I remember loving it, and being unable to put it down. When I saw all the love "Sorcery of Thorns" was getting, I knew I had to pick it up and see if the hype was worth it.

And, in my humble opinion, it was.

One thing I like about Rogerson's works so far is that they hit the ground running and they don't stop. The plot begins from the very first sentence, and the reader is taken along for the wild, bumpy, and often funny ride. This is very true in "Sorcery of Thorns," as the very first sentence indicates something terrible is going to happen. And it does, and then another thing happens, and another. And yet despite all this action, there is still time for some lightness and reflection; time for Elisabeth to really think about her world and her role in it, to think about what her actions and those of the people around her mean and are doing. Rogerson manages to expertly strike that balance between action and reflection that so many authors have failed.

I also love Elisabeth as a character. She, like the others in the novel, feels like a real person. She's brave, but she's also terrified. Smart, but still makes mistakes and overlooks details. Strong, but emotional and vulnerable when she needs to be. She felt like a character a young me would aspire to be: someone who is flawed but trying her best anyway. In fact, all the main characters are amazing. Nathanial stole my heart from his first appearance and just kept taking pieces of it right until the end, and Silas....oh there's nothing I can say about him that could do him the justice the book does.

This is one of those novels I can read over and over again and enjoy it every time. The humor hits me just right (I literally laughed out loud multiple times), and the emotions definitely sneak up on you by the end. I can't recommend this book enough!

TL;DR: Humorous, emotional, and well-written, with some pretty great characters. An exciting, engrossing read for anyone who wants a stand-alone fantasy with a dash of romance.

I went into this very hesitant because I was not a fan of an enchantment of ravens, though I am so glad I decided to pick this up! I absolutely adore this story!!! It was everything I wanted it to be! A new favorite for sure!
