An interesting enough story but wordy and could have been cut in half.

For a book that gives good glimpses at how damaging it was for children to be raised this way, the ending is a bit underwhelming. The Wilson weird and fun, yet still dealing with real human issues is present, but I more appreciate the way he has honed his niche in subsequent books.

I wanted to like this book more than I did. There are some great themes about the complexity of of parent/child relationships, which here play out in artistic (and often bizarre) extremes, but overall the book just didn't hold up for me.
This same material as a short story or novella would be incredibly powerful.
