i impulsively reread this at midnight after learning that tsushima is dazai’s daughter and my god does that piece of information just add so much more meaning to these two stories; you can see his artistic influence on her writing and you can certainly see how his death influenced her life, fully reflected in the stories she writes
the watery realm is such a profound tale of a dysfunctional parent-child dynamic, the disappointment that is adulthood, and motherhood — i hold this story so close to my heart (hence 5 stars)
of dogs and walls is a story filled with childish curiosity and melancholy, again focused on dysfunctional family dynamics — this tale was certainly reminiscent of dazai’s writing
