This is a tough book to review. While well written and intriguing, the subject matter, though very properly warned, was super dark. The MMC has very few redeeming qualities so far and you get to the end of book 1 with very few clues about what the acquisition is and why it holds so much weight. So far it is a bunch of very rich and powerful people doing awful things because they can. I will continue on with the series !

Starts with a 1 year contract for slavery but not sexual slavery. This book is not what I was expecting but I did listen to it in one go.
I will read the next one in the series.

This is pretty dark, but somehow hot. Isn't that a little twisted? I feel kind of fucked up, as much as the whole situation is where this story takes place. But I love twisted and fucked up characters.
The little cliffhanger here shot me right to the second book.

Too much/Not enough
...I don't know where I sit except on the edge of my seat. I'm alternating between cheering Stella on and raging with her to almost...almost feeling sorry for Sin, but not quite getting there. This book has move twists than a road on a mountain. I know that I'm already on the next book waiting for the next "trial" and all I can think of is how will Sin deal now that Stella is no longer his? Dark and sinister? Yes, this book is and it's not your average run of the milk. It's dark, it's pain, is shadow and secrets, it's a world where the elite rule and the rest much conform.

Counsellor was included as bonus material with [b:Blackwood|31445952|Blackwood|Celia Aaron|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1481077787s/31445952.jpg|52146919]. I liked Blackwood enough that I decided to check this one out even though I knew it was much darker having seen it compared to some of Pepper Winters' work. The comparison is fair. This serial (and it is a serial) is very much in the same trope as the In Debt series. Happily without the meandering and repetitive inner dialogues of those books. Also without the internal inconsistencies. Overall, I thought it was much more tightly written and the characters more believable. That said, once I understood that it was 1) the first in serial; and 2) it was going down the path of dark-tormented-hero abuses innocent-heroine, but it's out of his control so she ends up loving him anyway -- it hit my 'just no' button. So dnf.

This book might be twisted at times, but it's an interesting read. The concept of this huge kind of secret society and a completely different and twisted world of some very rich people isn't new - secret societies have existed for centuries, but this book takes it that one step further.
Yes there is pain involved and some chapters that are uncomfortable to read, but let's be honest there are some sick people in the world and so this to me is quite believable.
I actually liked Sinclair's character. He is the ultimate bad guy, arrogant, selfish and heartless. But is he? Not really, he just has the world on his shoulders and the only one (apart from his mysterious mother) that knows the full consequences of a failure.
Stella comes across like a strong character, hard to break, woman of opinion and she doesn't hold back in letting Sinclair know how she feels about him.
I felt a little sorry for both Stella and Sinclair towards the end and I am looking forward to reading the next book to see where the story will move on to.
