What keeps me from giving it 5 stars is that I fear the author did not intend what I got out of it

Insane last chapter: Gray deconstructs & satirises not just the novel but class, love & objectivity in storytelling/history. Keen to see how the film compares! 3🧠

I really struggled to get into this book, largely because of the layout and prose. I'm not usually a fan on an author writing fiction as though it were non-fiction, and this book definitely blurs the lines between reality and fantasy. While I found Bella to be charming, I couldn't get behind the gross ways that all the men around her took advantage of her, and the weird nature they all had to fall in love with her (essentially falling in love with a child in the body of a woman). It all seemed really icky to me. Victoria's letter at the end made me really uneasy, and seemed like she was completely unaware, or unwilling to accept, the power and control these men had over her. The whole thing seemed like an unsettling power trip that men have over women. Maybe that part was satire, but I just didn't get it.

But if you did like this, you'd also like Case Study by Graeme Macrae Burnet.

Horny adult-child Frankenstein battles ideology, social norms, masculinity and the patriarchy through (what I imagine looks like) LSD Victorian era Europe.

Is it a true story or fiction? Regardless, a WILD read.
