I'm offering an academic critique of this at an upcoming conference, the content of which will eventually appear on my website.
For causal readers, I would say this: if you're looking for a history of the evolution of Christianity throughout American history, this is (kind of) it. Smith does demonstrate the evolutionary nature of organized religion's stances and that relationship with the American populace, but it's shallow and only over political "hot" issues and national denominations.
