I haven't read the first book in this series yet. I don't feel like I missed anything, so I'd say this is a standalone.
The first chunk of this story was great. I was drawn into the story and anxious to find out more. The last quarter or so left me wanting, however. I'm not sure why Rob wasn't honest in the beginning. I also would have liked to see more time given to exploring both backstories.
I honestly think this is a case if the story suffering for the page count. I did enjoy it and plan to read the first book, and the third (is there going to be a third?).
