Excellent collection. The editors really knocked it out of the park with this one. I really appreciate the range of perspectives and topics covered here.

I love Vivian Gornick and her work so much I really wish she had not chosen 90% of the essays for this book to be of subjects that could have easily been written by her and not the contributors.

can I get the time back I spent reading these essays? some of them were genuinely good and some were well written but like come on. multiple essays about disability by non disabled people, an essay on gender by a cis white woman who says "I don't like the term cis" with no elaboration, an essay believing the US can be saved and has redeemable qualities??? like the themes were not themeing.
the essays I liked: any kind of leaving, fat man and little boy, bidders of the din, we were hungry, Ms. day lily, a fist of muscle, care credit

Love when college classes assign you books to read only for it to be glazed over in class
