I enjoyed the characters, without liking them very much. Neither is there much point to this story. It does move through fascinating times, "women's lib", race relations, etc. So, an interesting character study set against interesting times, as long as you are not looking for any deep themes.

Loved this book, the only Alice Adams I’ve read. Reminded me at times of Alice Munro in its honest and intimate portrayals of women and their various relationships and of Curtis Sittenfeld in both the content (thinking of Prep) and somewhat detached retrospection/introspection.

I think my sister gave me this book about ten years ago, and I love to reread it every few years.

If the novel of manners could be written for the 20th century but with a more apt sprinkling of femininity, sexuality, complete with a bit of class and race close mindedness quite telling of its time and today.

We are women.
We are superior women.
We are so weak.
