All of the time-jumping and perspective-jumping make this comic somewhat confusing, and sometimes the writing is a bit wordy, causing the experience of reading the small text in boxes to be a bit much (though no more than when Brian Michael Bendis goes off on neverending dialong...). That said, I love the art of this series, and the story is good, creative world-buidling, while simultaneously reflecting social issues without punching you in the face with them in a trite way.

Everything about this graphic novel drew me in. Synopsis, cover, art style, but it was the writing and story that we follow in these pages that kept me invested and so intrigued.

Spencer's relationship with his father is so realistic and complex, and it can be a bit uncommon to see such vulnerability and nuance of familial relationships in comics.

This is brilliant in all it sets out to do, subverting tropes and showing Black and African American culture in absolutely pure excellence.

Taking the Magical Negro trope (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MagicalNegro) and making it literal, then subverting it, is fodder for this Fantasy story that critiques society. It gets a bit lost in the weeds, though, especially when it plays the Daddy Issues trope straight, undercutting its message. Decent overall, though.

An interesting premise but the jumbled plot and progression leaves a lot to be desired. I won’t be continuing this.
