This book is amazing. These poems feature a devout poet-persona who meditates on his mother's death, on the many paradoxes and desperations of "growing up black white trash," on factory workers, and on eating animals. And he does all of this while wrapping in visions and religious narratives. McCrae's rhythm and language are incredibly rich, and they capture the low-church Read it.
