Barbara Hardy's "Tellers and Listeners: The Narrative Imagination" is a dense and somewhat academic look at the use of narrative within narrative in literature. There are some fascinating insights into the different ways novelists approach the use of smaller narratives within their larger works, but I wish Hardy would have drawn some stronger parallels between the stories within literature and the very human compulsion to tell stories to each other.
