I picked up this book to enjoy some crime thriller. In the end, what I ended up having was a book about an annoying and forward heroine with a co-protagonist/ love interest that was the wrong side of pathetic, and other sub-characters that were totally irrelevant (with a grown man who thought his parents were angels. Urrgggghhh). The villain was really boring and stupid and only served to make the plot even more annoying than it already was. I also wasn't sure whether the author was being derisive toward religion or not, and the main character just kept whining. This was just plain awful. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I was younger and more shallow. I definitely will not be reading book 2 in a hurry. I need to cleanse my reading palette from this book.

Weak premise, flat/one-dimensional characters, rather boring.

Definitely had that "first novel" feel to it, and also a "young author" feel - it was very earnest and trying hard to be edgy and disturbing. But I also love her writing, she knows how to keep a story going, and that made up for the downsides. I'm interested to see how the characters and writing progress through the rest of this series - I've read most of her newer books and they have such a different, more polished feel, and I would love to get to see that growth happen. If you're a Lisa Unger fan, this is 100% worth reading.

Didn't really care for this book. Thought it was boring with flat characters and what we were told about Lydia most of it I didn't like. Mainly there was too much religion in this book which really put me off a lot. I may try the next one and hope, since its away from the church, it won't be full of religious stuff.

As debut novels go, this was a pretty good effort. I did find a couple of things to be predictable, but I'm a fan of Lisa Unger's recent work and I'll continue to read her. Angel Fire, NM makes for a spooky setting, and the combination of the church, the blind guitarist, and buried bodies (and hearts!) all work to make Lydia Strong a compelling character. I want to continue the rest of this series.
