Tales of dragons are told in many cultures. Here, Mould collects four folktales, one original tale by another author, and five of his own stories. The illustrations are the highlight here. Mould’s artwork is curly and crisp, evocative and bright. His dragons are beautiful and creepy, but friendly too. His writing is uneven – mostly serviceable, with the occasional run-on sentence. One glaring issue is that he labels three of the folktales with their region of origin, but when it comes to the story from his cultural heritage, merely marks it “traditional.” Many children will enjoy reading through the selection of stories and poring over the pictures, but this is an additional purchase. \\pro review

I totally picked this up hoping to booktalk it at local elementary schools. But I remember being disappointed by the first sentence. This was actually probably one of the books that got it in my head that I always need to read the first sentence of a book before I commit to reading it. Because if it annoys me right off the bat, we're doomed.
Gorgeous illustrations, tho.
But srsly, dude. George and the Dragon is NOT traditional everywhere in the world.

This had potential, but it was not that good. The pictures were vibrant and colorful and sometimes reminded me of Tim Burton, especially the illustrations that were just lines. However, the writing was kinda bad. I think he tried to hard to be relevant to kids, and so the stories felt rushed and were finished too soon. I also didn't like any of his original stories. This is not the dragon book for me, I think.

Good retellings of a few dragon myths. A couple of nice stories, and a few other sections which are a bit poor./ Overall, my son liked 7 of the 10 pieces. He was not keen on the 'experimental' bits which cannot be called stories. The sort of crap you experiment with when just expanding your creative writing while at school or college.
So an extra star for the feeling put into the stories, but a star removed for use of language and style.
