By coincidence I ended up reading this recently published book alongside the older book of Brueggemann “The Bible Makes Sense”. They overlap on this matter of identifying the biblical texts that rise above all the others in significance. Harris comes up with a list of 15 though the exact number is not the point. He refers to them as the orienting texts. As I said in another review, we all do this in our reading of the text, but we do not always think about why we have settled on the key texts that we do. In his chapters on each of the orienting texts he does not add much that is new but it was good to read another example of how one thoughtful biblical scholar formats the whole of the scripture.
