Lots of character thought on page. The scholarship was an interesting plot device, but the way it played out left me uneasy.

Haddix does an excellent job of setting the tone for Becca’s story from the first pages; readers will feel the terror and sorrow Becca’s father has inflicted on her life as her story is told in the present day and in flashbacks leading to her senior year. Her self-inflicted loneliness and hopelessness cut deep and readers will feel frustrated right along with her as she tries to find a way out of the box her father’s actions have placed her in. The story’s many twists and turns will shock readers and have them rooting for Becca and her mother.

Kind of a Grisham/Baldacci legal/financial intrigue story for teens. Good character growth. Story gets a bit out of control, but I think teens will like it.

I really loved this book. I have read a lot of books by Margaret Peterson Haddix, but this would probably have to be my favorite. It's a story of a teenage girl, Becca, who's whole life seems to be spiraling down the drain when her father is arrested for computer scams. Her and her mother have to go into hiding and move to a new school but everything is not what it seems. Everything she does online is able to be found and tracked and three years after the trial, they are still hiding. But, with a new group of friends and a chance at a full-ride scholarship, can Becca win it to get to collage and is that even all there is to it?

interesting but farfetched plot. The author had the inside scoop on applying for various scholarships and senior year of high school.
