After reading reviews I wasn’t sure I’d like this book. It seems a bit marmite. But it turned out I enjoyed it and  I really devoured it. The writing style is similar to reading a kind of journal. Like the main character had been writing and recording everything that happened to her. Based on real characters and living through an awful period of history that I’m not wholly familiar with, I found it informative and sent me down lots of wormholes, reading further. It was hard sometimes to read, for many reasons, including the life of women and the power they lacked to make decisions for themselves and the treatment of the indigenous peoples. But I’d recommend if anyone is looking for historical fiction that is based on real happenings and people that doesn’t shy away from the truth and makes you think.
