The only thing keeping this from being a solid 5 stars was the ghost story aspect. It felt unnecessary to the plot, and I would have liked to have seen her relationships with her friends develop more instead of seeing so much of the ghost story aspect. But, this is a VERY good representation of chronic invisible illness, the range of reactions people have toward people with those illnesses, and the horrendous flaws in the medical system and how people with invisible illnesses/disabilities are often treated.

More than a scary story for middle-grade kids, this is a story about the transition into middle school and living with chronic illness / "invisible" illness - and these things the author does really, really well. I'd highly recommend this book to all young readers, even if they themselves don't suffer from chronic or "invisible" illness. (Also, hooray for casually queer and diverse family structures!)
