I have no idea why I waited two years to pick up another Jessica Hawkins book. The way she writes is pure poetry and, regardless the story, it speaks directly to my soul. If there's such a thing as a spirit animal but with authors, then Miss Hawkins is mine.
I have so many thoughts about this book. I can't even word them. I read it overnight and forgot all about sleep. It consumed me. And that ending pretty much wrecked me. I need book 2 ASAP. If you haven't yet, you need to pick this one up.
I can't understand why people aren't shouting this author's name from the rooftops. She's pure gold.

The starting was nice and then later it got very soap-series-like slow drama ? Dnfed at 75% . Like dude you have feelings for both girls/sisters ?? How come ?

Taboo, angsty, and dramatic. I'm in this series, guys.
So we follow 16 year old Lake who meets 23 year old Manning one summer because he is working on construction across from her house. They are drawn together for reasons I cannot say in fear of spoiling for you. Problem is, Lake's 19 year old sister Tiffany, who is used to getting all the male attention, sets her sights on Manning. Let the angst ensue.
Okay, I know the age gap is weird because she is 16. BUT keep an open mind if you like taboo. This book is not spicy, I think later in the trilogy it will be, but I'm not sure.
Now, the characters. Lake is definitely mature for her age, but she is absolutely a 16 year old girl and it shows in her POV's. I like her, but sometimes I was like... girl, stop. Tiffany, the sister, irks me. One minute I will like her, and the next I think she's the worst. We will see how her character develops in the next two books. Manning, although I like him, confuses me a little bit with his decisions.
I had to sit on this rating because though I couldn't put it down, and I had a good ole angsty time, there were things I wasn't 100% sure about. BUT I will be finishing this series because the plot twist at the end of this one? WHAT??? Now on to the next!

The age gap is kinda creepy at the beginning and I almost stopped reading but my BFF liked this book so I kept going and I really liked it by the end. On to book 2!

Something in the Way is a good fit for those seeking a heartfelt and introspective romance that explores the complexities of forbidden love and the challenges of age differences.

So here's the thing- This is book one of three. It gives you the beginning of a story. It leads you on a path. An awkward, questionable, and twisty stomach filled with doubt kind of path. Just when you are about to get to a destination, you are ripped off course by a tornado.
So the question: did I like the book?
The answer: I don't know.
Manning has some behavior that leaves me with unease. Tiffany makes me want to beat her head in. Lake, poor Lake, has no idea that 16 is very far from adult.
Three lives uniquely woven together by the odd circumstance of a temporary job. Manning's construction job puts him adjacent to the two very different girls. Both peak his interest but for different reasons.
I thought this couldn't get any more universally f-ed up but believe me IT DOES. Manning is just a poor kid from the wrong side of the tracks. It seems everyone wants to keep him there.
So did I like it? I still am not sure. I don't like what happened but life happens...so...
Do I like the awkwardness? No but I understand it.
Do I understand his reasoning? Yes but it still makes me uncomfortable and that was probably the point.
When I read the blurb, I was wary. I wasn't even sure I could like it. I think I do but that will all depend on the rest of the trilogy.

I love Lake and Manning for each other. My heart breaks for them and I know is ahead. It is so clear they have a connection and belong together, but there are so many obstacles for these two. Can't wait to read more though!
