This is a fun book. Both my 6 and 8 year old were enthralled.

really enjoyed this series growing up so I thought I’d give a reread a shot - I don’t believe I ever finished the series

Midnight for Charlie Bone lays the groundwork for a long series - and it’s a lot of groundwork. We’ve got the entire magic system, family histories that lay the groundwork for modern day rivalries, literal kidnapping, steampunk disillusioned fathers, and parents that may or may not be dead.

random thoughts:

Paton’s powers and the way he (fails to) deal with them are so interesting to me.

Billy’s whole tragic orphan thing. I really feel for the kid being torn between the good guys and the bad guys.

Olivia is amazing, just like I remembered. So fun and willing to get into trouble.

Charlie is a doer, not a thinker. Boy needs to stop and consider some potential outcomes before he throws all his friends into danger

There is a certain heroism that we see in TV shows that appears in this book. It was a quick read, wasn't troubling except for how the beleaguered children were treated, and in the end not only did the good guys win, they walked down the hallway, capes flapping in a breeze that came out of nowhere. No one could stop their progress of these misfits out to save Charlie, the glue that holds them all together.

A childhood favourite. Basic magical English boarding school stuff that got published in the initial Potter madness of the early 00's - Bloor's Academy is a school for children gifted in the creative & performing arts AND for Endowed children, whose magic abilities derive from their joint ancestor, an African magician from the 13th century called the Red King.

Bits of it hold up, other bits don't - I found the pacing slightly variable, but the characters felt just as real and well drawn as I recall. It was nice to dip back in and rip through something very quick and very light.
