These books were my CHILDHOOD! Absolute favorite! I remember religiously reading and rereading some of the books in this series, and rereading it again as an adult still made me smile. I don’t remember ever reading this one as a kid, and it wasn’t as good as the other ones… for some reason, the stories just didn’t have the same impact as some of the others. But I’m still glad I got to read it, and I look forward to reading the rest!

the final 5-star read from betty macdonald. this read really continued the magic of the books not just through the writing but through the cozy illustrations we saw in the first two books too. the vibes of a 40s home in a small American town are somehow unmatched here (??)

I love Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle. I wish I'd lived with her.

These books were the first time in my childhood I learned that chapter books can make you laugh and cry.

I remember these books from my childhood and loving them to pieces, so I figured it was time for a revisit.

For the most part, they hold up. Some of the stories are better than others. I enjoyed The Show-Off Cure and The Whisperer the most. The Crybaby Cure and The Slowpoke were my least favorite. Melody was unlikable both before and after the cure. Harbin was just a little much for me and the “cure” for him was so instantaneous that it was hard to continue to suspend my disbelief. Additionally, there’s no indication if it continued to work past this one day. This last issue happens in many of the stories, so it’s not unique to this one. But that story seemed to have the worst of that particular trait.

Overall, it was still enjoyable and a series I would still recommend :)

Another childhood favorite that rereading to my daughter in adulthood has been eye opening. Super 50s style parenting, all at the expense of children who do not have the capacity to develop these skills on their own and need their parents to help them. Many of these “disorders” are completely normal child behavior, and it’s heart breaking to see them be so dismissed and “fixed” in extreme ways. The cry baby cure broke my heart, the poor girl never once received an ounce of love or validation. Just a medicine that made her flood the house when she cried. Also still fat phobic and racist language. Went in the rubbish bin after.
