I read this on a flight, which was the wrong place to read it, because it deserved much closer attention than I was able to give it. Like all of Alvarez’s work, the writing is jarring my exquisite, and the cruelty of social injustice and it’s harms is spoken into sharp relief. The idea that though all of our hearts break, society is set up in such a way that some are broken worse, more intentionally, and more often runs throughout. The text explodes with vivid lines that I anticipate will live in my head and emerge often for a long time.
