Delightful read. Examples are mostly about painters, but the ideas are relevant to any sphere of artistic endeavor. Or just living your life! I loved it and will return for some of the pithy quotes.

A fast, thought provoking and entertaining read. I was less interested in the last section which deals with the necessity for school curricula to adapt widely understood creative thinking processes.  I absolutely agree, but it wasn’t anything new to me.

Nice little book, easy to read and the lessons are certainly applicable beyond art itself. Liked the sections on copying and stealing and the examples of how the addition of a tiny detail can change the meaning and impact of a work. Agreed with his thoughts on the need for more creative environments in education and the workplace .

Think Like an Artist: How to Live a Happier, Smarter, More Creative Life
Written by Will Gompertz

3 STARS

I thought this was a book on creativity for all kinds of artist but it actually focuses more on a particular artist (paintings, drawing, etc). I loved the quotes from different artists and learning a little bit about them and how they relate in someone wanting to take that path on life. It did not suit my purposes but still a fun book to browse through.

"As Leonardo da Vinci once observed, "It has long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things."

Will Gompertz has spent years observing artists at the peak of their careers. In this book, he shares his observations about how their thinking helps them be successful. I enjoyed parts of this -- the first-hand accounts of seeing artists at work, the conversations with artists, etc. But the revelations here were nothing new, and there were few practical takeaways.
