"I don't want to go back to just being sad all the time. I don't think my heart can bear it."

I won't say what happens, because spoilers. I will say that this one's a sad one and that it also feels right. Like maybe we needed to remember just how dangerous this life Johnny and Fran have decided to take on really is.

It may explain a lot about their descendants, but this pivotal moment is a heartbreaking one.

The First Fall, written by Seanan McGuire, is number 0.07 in the InCryptid series. We're still following Fran and Johnny Healy, whom I'll admit I've become very fond of. I know that's probably not the smartest decision on my part, given that their story is set in the past. But the heart wants what the heart wants.

It also makes this story all the more painful. This is not an easy read, nor is it a light one. In fact, I'll be straight with you here - this short story had me crying. It's borderline too much at times, so readers should consider themselves warned.

This is the story of how Fran and Johnny Healy had to bury their baby boy – who was only a few years old at the time. It will gut readers, though I'm sure our pain would only pale in comparison to what the parents would be feeling, were they not creatures of fiction.

This was a pretty sad short story, I knew it was going to happen, but yeah, it was hard to read!

My heart hurts. It does. Wow, that was a painful one to read and probably not the one I really wanted to read right before I went to bed. Hmm.

I think I’ve got the reason why I’m not jumping up and down over the InCryptid shorts, because I like the short stories, but I don’t love them: While they’re good glimpses into the Price family and their lives, but because they’re so short, they tend to gloss over certain parts. For example, with Married in Green and The First Fall, they’re both extremely important moments in Frances and Jonathan’s lives but because I haven’t really seen their courtship or their life with Daniel, there’s not as huge of an impact to me as a reader with Daniel’s death. I get the Price family’s grief, and it is a huge impact on the backstory, especially when you find out how Daniel dies…but because we only have one glimpse of Daniel in Sweet Poison Wine, I wanted to get a look into his short life to get that impact. There’s a lot set up in here for later backstory, but I wanted more of the grief and the immediate emotions rather than “Here’s what’s going to be important later.”

The first tragedy.  The first loss on page. And what comes after.

If you intend to read this short in the InCryptid world, have a box of tissues nearby. I started crying on the first page and didn't stop until I was several pages into the next short! How freaking sad?!?! So, we are still following the Healys and mostly Jonathan and Fran. And this book shows that things are not always all good. I wish that more detail was given into how the tragedy occurred, but if you're planning to read this, keep in mind we do get more detail in the next short. I knocked down a star because of the lack of detail.
