Silver and Gold carried us into Dawn's dark past and provided answers regarding empowerment and the forces working behind the scenes in pursuit of their own conflicting goals. With Past and Future O'Toole carries us in the opposite direction, dropping Dawn into a potential future timeline where she can see the dangers possibly awaiting her and those she cares about.

The novel wastes no time jumping into its central plot as Dawn finds herself out of her element and in a world she does not understand. With so much changed, and even those she cares about transformed by tragedy, one thing remains the same--Dawn will do what she must to protect those around her.

One strength of the Red and Black series is the way that O'Toole carries readers into fresh circumstances and storylines with each book. This fourth installment in the series allows her to paint an apocalyptic future for the characters--a world of sinister corporations operating with impunity and an underground movement of people fighting for survival.

Past and Future feels like a sidestep from the main storyline of the series, but in the midst of this, it still provides dramatic revelations that will echo back to Dawn's present and shape the course of events for her and her friends. O'Toole continues to deliver a diverse cast of engaging characters, dramatic action, and a sweeping superhero narrative that holds plenty of surprises along the way. Book 4 is a tightly focused narrative that will be sure to provide the action, heart, humor, and superhero adventure that fans of the series will come to expect. It's an exciting new chapter in Dawn's story, and promises big things still to come.
