This book was very cute! But not my favorite sadly and I did not love it.

I was so interested in this book for the fake dating trope and it was well done. The reasoning behind the fake dating was great and I really liked the fake dating aspect of this story overall. Beyond that I didn’t love much about this book.

My issue with it was that it didn’t consistently keep my attention. There were parts where I was like, oh my gosh this is so cute, I must keep reading and other parts (a lot more than the former) where I was just kind of meh about it.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

“The Break Up Pact” is a cute story that checks off all the boxes when it comes to a typical second chance romance book. I thought both main characters had chemistry on the page, and while the story itself is a bit far fetched (aren’t they always in these kinds of books though), I think the tie in to their history makes it a bit more believable. The banter back and forth is a bit cheesy but in the cutest way (sorry I may use that word again a few times, but it’s really the word I kept thinking of as I read this book). I liked the fact that the conflict wasn’t as dramatic, roll your eyes at the drama fight as some books have and a little more natural in terms of the breaking apart and coming together that made the characters a bit more human. I also really identified with their shared loss and how that plays a roll in their relationship.

I did not love how each ex was handled. Levi’s past relationship is left a bit too open for my liking, and I think that created a bit of confusion for me as a reader—does he want to get back together with his ex or be with June? It also drags on a bit too long and has a rather unfulfilling conclusion. Meanwhile, it would almost be better to leave Griffin out of the whole book than include their interactions. Also have to say that while I knew this book would go hard into social media, I felt like those pieces were overly shallow and silly.

However, at the end of the day, this story was still super cute. I became invested in the story quickly and kept reading late into the night because I wanted to see how these two found their way to each other. If you aren’t a fan of cheesy second chance romances, this book is definitely not for you. Lucky for me, it’s a secret pleasure of mine and “The Break Up Pact” did not disappoint!

Thank you NetGalley for this advanced copy. It was a truly sweet story of childhood best friends and coming home. Some grief mixed with hidden love & heartache. I loved the plot line revolving around the initial internet break ups & revenge exes. I do think Levi was a tad insufferable, but we managed! The trivia scene and the scene afterward was sooooooo good. All in all 3.25 stars ⭐️

Coming from recently finishing Emily Henry’s Funny Story, this gave the same vibes. 2 character recently broken up with in very public manners, decide to fake date, one to get their ex back and the other to hep their flailing business.

First things first, this book is funny. Lots of zingy one liners from the couple and the best, best friend. I loved all the inside jokes between the main characters.

With that being said. This wasn’t as light and fluffy as I was expecting. There is a big underlying theme of grief of losing a loved one and finding yourself after a difficult break up. It’s a mature romance and although quick paced, it dealt with these topics realistically for the most part.

I would recommend for reader who love an emotional romance with small town vibes, lots of comedy with a touch of dramatics

2.5 rounded down. After now reading two second chance books from Emma, I'm convinced that I don't enjoy the trope from her.

Something about the writing left me feeling very disconnected from the characters and the ending felt rushed. I found myself rolling my eyes on multiple occasions. I love fake dating and second chance romance but this did not worked for me like at all.
