The setting was surprising and engrossing, an entirely new world coming to life. The use of females as assassins and men as soldiers was interesting, and added a new depth to the story. Lilaci goes through a lot of emotional and physical torment, that forever changes who she is, giving her character a more dynamic cast. Sometimes her choices seem very spontaneous and random, and sometimes they seem well-thought out. Her relationship with Fewn is also worth noting. Fewn is sort of like what Lilaci would have been like if she hadn't had such a rough beginning to the assassin world. Since we don't know Fewn's backstory, we can only assume that her complex emotions come from some innate jealousy of Lilaci (I don't buy it).

Pros:
-Good setting: desert is unforgiving, nice parallel with assassins
-Complex villains: the gods seem to be human in every aspect; Lilaci's trainer is also quite human, since he is motivated by power, fame, riches, etc.
-Characters keep you on your toes
-Lots of unexpected plot progression

Cons:
-Plot was occasionally predictable and sometimes random
-Characters were a bit difficult to connect with
-There was a lot of seemingly unrelated background to the characters and the story (maybe related in future books?)
-The summary of the book makes it seem like Kera will be more important. She isn't even mentioned until well over halfway through, and you don't meet her until the book is almost done. I was hoping to have the character's backgrounds play off each other, like having part of the story from Kera's perspective.

Waiting for the next book now! I have some unanswered questions!
