kinda scared me towards christianity i won’t lie. though it was a little hard for me to read, just because i rarely read epic poetry, i mostly enjoyed the story even if dante (character) is a little …  condescending to the souls literally being tortured. very cool and groundbreaking image of hell

This is my third or fourth time through this book. To my mind, definitely the weakest of the trilogy. It is essentially a hit piece against Dante’s real-world enemies, all of whom suffer in grievously horrific ways in the pit of hell. Insights are scarce - you’re instead left to contemplate despair, of which worthy contemplation is not a deep well.

My favourite bit was when Dante said the first circle of hell is reserved for everybody who is able to leave the house and celebrate NYE with their friends :) because I cannot :)

(couldn't just leave my review at that, though, could I!? Dead interesting in places, always a sucker for a good fantasy-adjacent map too. I think the translation might've been a bad one though - "rottenpockets", for example, is stupid - and I reckon I'd get more from re-reading it now that I've got the basic plot / journey down. See ya next year!)

So much better than I expected to be honest. It took me a bit to finish because so much happens in each canto. Descriptions of Hell are equally jarring and beautiful. I’m very thankful for the summaries before each canto and the notes afterwards because I would have definitely been lost. They make the plot so much clearer, but the actual poem is where the pain and the emotion lies. I’m not sure if this is a hot take, but it seems like The Inferno is more of a way to advance Dante politically by elevating himself and tearing down adversaries in Italy, rather than a pious journey through hell. Anyways, I’m glad I now understand its impact and success.

Wanted to take a stab at the classics, but too difficult to read, even with all the notes. Knowing the plot itself is interesting, but to read it felt like a chore
