Goodness. This children's book is just beautiful (it is genuinely one of the best pictures books I have ever had the fortune to read).

The watercolour illustrations are simply magical. There is so much attention to detail, and I loved looking more closely at the posters on the walls, the ornaments on the mantle and the details of the 19th Century skyline. This book would be worth reading just for the pictures!

But of course, it is not just pictures! They illustrate the beautiful and touching story of a young girl who sprouts a large tail and bat wings one morning! Tia is forced to wear big crinolines and dresses to hide her "abnormalities" -- but the story ultimately encourages us to appreciate the things that make us different. It also teaches children an important message; that is, that we should never suffer in silence, and that we don't always know what is happening in the lives of the people around us.

Old or young, I would wholeheartedly recommend this book. I am going to be sending a copy to my little second cousins (4 and 6) who I know will love this.
