A really interesting, comprehensive book about the value of a good night's sleep. Matthew Walker gives some really compelling arguments about why our current culture (from schools, to workplaces, to home life) has failed us in the realm of sleep, and why that is lowering both our lifespans and our quality of life. Also some really interesting data here on the health benefits of sleep, as well as the detriments that even a few days of minor sleep deprivation can have on the body—which isn't great to hear when you have insomnia, but still useful.

I do think he is a little caught up in the "increased productivity" of workers as a result of sleep improvement, which, seeing as he's a sleep consultant with large F500 companies, I understand but I don't have to like. Wish we could promote things for human health without thinking about corporate profits!!!

Very informative and important, but it took me ages to finish. I kept putting it down and switching to another book. Maybe because I’m a scientist I struggled to read this in my downtime without it feeling a little like work? But 100% recommend because of the importance of the topic.

We are, as you will see, socially, organizationally, economically, physically, behaviorally, nutritionally, linguistically, cognitively and emotionally dependent upon sleep.

I first came across Why We Sleep in the "New in Nonfiction" section on Audible's homepage, and it caught my eye because it's narrated by one of my favorite narrators, Steve West. On a whim, I decided to go ahead and use one of my credits on it because it sounded pretty interesting and I wanted to listen to a familiar narrator. Little did I know that this would be my favorite book this year!

Based on the subtitle Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams you may think it sounds like it would be full of generic advice about getting a good night's sleep or interpreting your dreams. But that is NOT what this book is. It's actually very scientific and Walker cites study after study explaining why we need sleep for every aspect of our lives. Our society holds some really erroneous beliefs about sleep and Walker debunks those myths with science. Walker addresses everything you ever wanted to know about sleep and more in this book and I was completely enthralled for all 14 hours of it. I've recommended this to everyone I know because the information presented here is just so IMPORTANT. After finishing this book, I've completely overhauled my sleep habits and am sleeping better because of those changes.

I seriously want to buy a copy of this book for every single person I know and shove it in their faces. Read this NOW.

This is eye-opening and I recommend to everyone. The sections of shortened sleep on immunity, learning & retaining info were most useful for me personally. Very interesting suggestions in regards to children's ADHD diagnoses and the health & achievement effects of early school start times that harden me even further against them. I will especially be applying some of the info here as I continue working 12 hour night shifts.
