This book has etched phrases onto my bones and revealed words that were always there on my heart. "But she was one of those children who cannot help behaving well." A yearly reread.

putting this on queer lit bc although nothing is explicit i know that this girl would've gotten expelled from making out with the protestant convert if she didn't get expelled from writing her novel lmao

I had a friend, a devout Catholic, who used to say that all religions were really about oppressing women. In this case, Nanda, a Catholic convert, is sent to a Catholic girls' school when she's nine. She wants very much to be a good Catholic, but as she grows up she begins to see the cruelty of the nuns. In the end, her father, whom she has looked up to and adores, betrays her in a most terrible way. Loss of innocence, power disguised as concern, the hypocrisy of the adults around her - this is a quiet book, but its themes are fierce. Thanks, https://www.backlisted.fm/ Backlisted, for the recommendation.
